Description

"Ripple - mark" cup by Sèvres in porcelain, celadon enamel, biscuit base, dated 1985 and monogrammed LG.

It is appropriate to allocate a separate place to this RippleMark cup - a copy of which is in the Museum of Decorative Arts - that Louis Gosselin executed during his stays as a guest artist at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres. Although the distant idea comes from the examination of the internal structure of the ivory, it takes its name, in English, from these parallel wrinkles that the surf inscribed on the sand of the beaches; the inside and outside of the cup being decorated with undulating lines, it was necessary to prevent problems of tension between swellings and depressions that could cause the piece to break on its own either during drying or during the contraction suffered during cooking, by pre-seeing that the two networks of wrinkles intersect at an appropriate angle, which ensures the solidity of the cut, while avoiding the right angle so as to satisfy the eye, since the translucency of the porcelain makes them see in superposition. This technical feat proves the virtuosity of this artist that Europeans have been able to recognize, make work, welcome both in Sèvres and at the prestigious Maeght Foundation.
