Description

Hand-modeled stoneware bowl coated with a beautiful glaze in shades of beige and brown, signed below the base by Alain Vernis.

Alain Vernis is the ceramist of the unique bowl, which unites being and doing, and enables him to express his relationship with the universe and time. This explains why these rare pieces sometimes bear such a strong resemblance to the Japanese bowls of certain potters from the 16th-century Momoyama period, which saw the rise of a spirituality linked to an acute awareness of the reality of the moment.

Alain Vernis was born in 1946 in Sens (Yonne). [...] After his studies, in 1968, he began a long series of journeys to India, Laos, Burma, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya, Yemen and Ethiopia, during which he developed a new means of expression, photography.

In 1985, he set up his studio in the Haut-Morvan, a region with harsh winters where the earth can remain frozen for long months, and leads a life of solitude and asceticism, living off what nature offers him, which is difficult but also generous. Out of necessity and exigency, he took up ceramics alone, using the region's clays and minerals, immersing himself totally in this practice, which he experimented with empirically and with infinite passion.
