"Recto-verso" sculpture in painted earthenware, with polychrome decoration of stylized and abstract figures, signed Portanier 02, unique piece.
Gilbert Portanier is one of the ceramists who contributed to the revival of French ceramics from the 1950s to the present day. After studying architecture at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he discovered the world of ceramics during a visit to Vallauris and met Picasso. He settled in a traditional, century-old pottery workshop where he had spacious studios in which he applied a variety of techniques and created his own language, materialized by a highly free and expressive style.
