Large wood-fired ceramic vase, polychrome enamel, circa 1960, signed below the Malarmey Vallauris base.
Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-arts de Reims, Jean-Claude Malarmey joined fellow students Dominique Baudart and Robert Pérot at Jean Rivier's studio in Vallauris in 1954.
The three went on to create the Atelier du Vieux Moulin in the upper part of Vallauris. He founded his own workshop in 1957, producing wood-fired pieces.
Initially marked by a very primitive style, JC Malarmey evolved towards highly refined glazes for personal pieces evoking the great decorative oriental ceramics.
