Description

Raku glazed sculpture "The Juggler" signed Roger Capron, circa 2006.

Roger Capron is one of those Parisian artists, trained at the School of Applied Arts, who settled in Vallauris, where he arrived in 1946. There, he first established a very large tile factory, which employed up to 120 people, producing such famous pieces as the decoration of the Cannes Maritime Station (recently dismantled!). His earthenware tiles, and later, from 1969 onwards, earthenware or stoneware tiles, with their cheerful animal motifs, are very well known, but they did not overshadow his more contemporary and abstract explorations. This factory closed in 1982, and Roger Capron, along with his wife Jacotte, adopted another technique: raku . Drawing on their Mediterranean culture and their innate humor, they devoted themselves to the joyful reconstruction of a sophisticated and happy world.
